“I will,” said the Karrn, tucking the mechanical hand under his left arm and extending his right to the gnome. When Haldin shook it, he had something in his own hand; an opal ring, signifying membership in the Order of Rekkenmark.

“It belonged to the brother of the cadet I mentioned,” said the gnome softly. “I thought he might find it useful.”

“Now,” he said brightly, as Mordan pocketed the ring, “I suggest you go with our friends from House Cannith and see how well their gift suits you.”

Graeme Davis started playing Dungeons & dragons® in the mid-1970s, shortly after it was first imported into his native Britain.

His first paid writing for the game was an article in Games Workshop’s White Dwarf magazine in 1982, and he has worked in the gaming industry since leaving university in 1986. He has written over 30 books and 100 magazine articles for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and other roleplaying games, and contributed to the design of more than 15 computer and video games. This is his first novel.
