| When the Buddha-night had already fallen-ended his speech, many a pilgrim stepped forward and asked to accepted into the community, sought refuge in the teachings. | Когда Будда, с наступлением ночи, закончил свою проповедь, некоторые из прибывших странников выступили вперед и высказали свое желание вступить в общину и стать его учениками. |
| And Gotama accepted them by speaking: | И Гаутама принял их, говоря: |
| "You have heard the teachings well, it has come to you well. | - Вы слышали учение, слышали, чего оно требует. |
| Thus join us and walk in holiness, to put an end to all suffering." | Придите же к нам и живите в святости, дабы положить конец всякому страданию. |
| Behold, then Govinda, the shy one, also stepped forward and spoke: | И тут - о диво - выступил Говинда, всегда такой робкий, и со словами: |
| "I also take my refuge in the exalted one and his teachings," and he asked to accepted into the community of his disciples and was accepted. | "И я прибегаю к Возвышенному и его учению", -попросил принять его в среду учеников, и был принят. |
| Right afterwards, when the Buddha had retired for the night, Govinda turned to Siddhartha and spoke eagerly: | Вслед за тем, как Будда удалился для ночного отдыха, Говинда горячо обратился к Сиддхартхе: |

| Govinda has heard the teachings, he has taken refuge in it. | Говинда внял ему и стал его учеником. |
| But you, my honoured friend, don't you also want to walk the path of salvation? | Ты же, столь почитаемый мною, неужели не хочешь идти по стезе спасения? |
| Would you want to hesitate, do you want to wait any longer?" | Неужели ты еще колеблешься, хочешь обождать? |
| Siddhartha awakened as if he had been asleep, when he heard Govinda's words. For a long tome, he looked into Govinda's face. | Сиддхартха словно пробудился от сна, услыхав слова Говинды, Долго глядел он в лицо друга. |
| Then he spoke quietly, in a voice without mockery: | Потом тихо, без малейшей насмешки в голосе, произнес: |
| "Govinda, my friend, now you have taken this step, now you have chosen this path. | - Г овинда, друг мои, наконец-то ты сделал решительный шаг, наконец-то сам избрал свой путь. |
| Always, oh Govinda, you've been my friend, you've always walked one step behind me. | Всегда, о Говинда, ты был лишь моим другом, всегда шел только следом за мной. |
| Often I have thought: Won't Govinda for once also take a step by himself, without me, out of his own soul? | Часто думалось мне: неужели Говинда никогда не сделает шага самостоятельно, без меня, по собственному почину? |
| Behold, now you've turned into a man and are choosing your path for yourself. | И вот ты возмужал наконец и сам избираешь свой путь. |
| I wish that you would go it up to its end, oh my friend, that you shall find salvation!" | Да обретешь ты на нем спасение! |
| Govinda, not completely understanding it yet, repeated his question in an impatient tone: | Но Говинда, не совсем поняв слова, повторил свой вопрос тоном нетерпения: |
