One great sadness is that I was never able to meet Ingrid’s father, Wilfried, so I gave him a cameo in this book as my way of introducing myself to him, and of saying thank you. I hope he approves of me.
Finally, I want to make a further, special acknowledgement in this book to everyone who has lost loved ones through dementia, or is living with loved ones experiencing dementia. This book is dedicated to my beloved grandparents, Fred and Jessie Wright, who both found their sharp, brave and funny minds submerged, in different ways, towards the end of their lives. They were in my thoughts as I wrote about Stephen, as were many other people, especially Hazel Buck, mother of the wonderful Lucy Buck, who smiled throughout our Sussex lunch as I was writing
