Три года спустя я вспомнил об этих словах со слезами на глазах, узнав о трагической гибели Индиры Ганди. Ее убийство мрачно напомнило судьбу Махатмы Ганди, ее наставника и тезки. И это убийство заставило меня по-новому осмыслить мое восприятие живущих в Индии людей как мягких и привлекательных по своей природе. В то же самое время моя беседа с ней еще глубже запечатлелась в моей памяти.

Индира Ганди была одной из самых замечательных женщин, которых я когда-либо встречал. До поездки в Индию у меня сложился ее образ как одного из доминирующих мировых лидеров, жесткого, холодного в своих расчетах, в чем-то надменного и автократического… Я не знаю, в какой мере этот образ был верным или ошибочным. Но то, что я узнал, является в высшей степени однозначным. Индира Ганди, с которой я встретился, была тепла, очаровательна, полна проникновенным сочувствием и мудростью. Когда я покидал я ее кабинет и выходил из Дома парламента через холлы и коридоры, проходя мимо чиновников и охраны, мне вспомнилась фраза Лэйнга как идеальное выражение того, что я пережил: подлинная человеческая встреча между двумя людьми.
