An Assamese driver (один Ассамский погонщик), two or three elephants ahead (впереди /Тумаи/ на два или три слона), turned round angrily, crying (сердито повернулся и закричал): “Bring up Kala Nag (выведи вперед Кала Нага; to bring up – приводить, выводить), and knock this youngster of mine into good behavior (и вбей в этого моего молодого /слона/ хорошее поведение; to knock – ударять, стучать; to knock into – вбивать /знания в голову и т. п./). Why should Petersen Sahib have chosen me to go down with you donkeys of the rice fields (и почему Петерсену Сахибу надо было выбрать /именно/ меня идти с вами, ослы рисовых полей; to choose – выбирать)? Lay your beast alongside, Toomai (поставь свое животное рядом /с моим/, Тумаи; to lay – класть, положить; ставить; alongside – неподалeку, поблизости; около, возле, рядом), and let him prod with his tusks (пусть он проткнет /его/ бивнями; to prod – колоть, тыкать; прокалывать, протыкать). By all the Gods of the Hills (клянусь всеми Богами Гор), these new elephants are possessed (эти молодые слоны одержимы /дьяволом/; to possess – владеть, обладать; to be possessed – быть одержимым), or else they can smell their companions in the jungle (или же они чуют своих товарищей в джунглях; to smell – чувствовать запах, чуять).”

Kala Nag hit the new elephant in the ribs and knocked the wind out of him (Кала Наг ударил молодого: «нового» слона под ребра и /на мгновение/ выбил из него воздух = дух; to knock out – выбить), as Big Toomai said (а Большой Тумаи сказал), “We have swept the hills of wild elephants at the last catch (мы вымели = очистили горы от диких слонов во время последнего захвата = похода; to sweep – мести; сметать). It is only your carelessness in driving (это все твоя небрежность в /умении/ направлять и вести /животных/; care – забота; внимание, тщательность; careless – небрежный; to drive – везти, перевозить; направлять и вести вперед /о запряженных животных/). Must I keep order along the whole line (может, мне /одному/ держать в порядке всю вереницу; order – порядок)?”
