В XVIII в. капитан и другие офицеры выбирали рабов, которых они хотели взять с собой в качестве дополнительной льготы к оплате (оставляя себе тех, кого можно продать дороже других), но если эти рабы умирали, их меняли на других, чтобы потеря дохода шла за счет владельца.
