| A Lady, young and fair, to marry feels inclined; | Невеста-девушка смышляла жениха; |

| The mischief is, she's so particular; | Да вот что грех: она была спесива. |
| He must be talented, a man of spotless truth, | Сыщи ей жениха, чтоб был хорош, умён, |
| Distinguished and well-born, and in the prime of youth; | И в лентах, и в чести, и молод был бы он |
| (You'll own that her demands go rather far); | (Красавица была немножко прихотлива): |
| He must be everything; and where's the man that is? | Ну, чтобы всё имел - кто ж может всё иметь? |
| Then please to notice this! | Ещё и то заметь, |
| He must be true to her, but not the slightest jealous. | Чтобы любить её, а ревновать не сметь. |
| Exacting! Still she shows so fair among her fellows | Хоть чудно, только так была она счастлива, |
| That suitors of the choicest sort | Что женихи, как на отбор, |
| Drive daily to her door to pay her court; | Презнатые катили к ней на двор. |

| 'No suitor there will suit for me; | Не женихи, а женишонки! |
| You never could expect so poor a lot would pass!- | Ну, как ей выбирать из этих женихов? |
| One lacking in distinction, one in class, | Тот не в чинах, другой без орденов; |
| And one, who has them both - poor boy, he's got no money; | А тот бы и в чинах, да жаль, карманы пусты; |
| Another's nose is squat, another's eyebrows funny.' | То нос широк, то брови густы; |
| One's that, and one's not this; | Тут этак, там не так; |
| In short, there's none of them will suit my dainty miss. | Ну, не придёт никто по мысли ей никак. |
